In the Spotlight: Anthony Joshua Fighting for Heavyweight Title

By: Erika D. Coldman

Last year, Anthony Joshua, the Olympic Gold medal winning, undefeated boxer, graced our cover. He sat down with The Gist letting us in on his rough teenage years and how those missteps ushered him right into the boxing ring.  At the time of our interview, Joshua had a 10-0 record, a WBC International Heavyweight title, and his sights on the coveted world title. April 9th, he will get his shot. Set to face American IBF Heavyweight champion, Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs), Joshua has a chance at winning the title on his turf as the already sold out bout will be recorded live at the O2 Arena in London, England.

It’s no secret that competing at this level has always been a dream of the 26-year-old’s since he began his professional career. According too boxingnewsresults.com, he respects his opponent as a “hungry competitor”, realizing this will be a match that will shape the rest of his career.

Boasting a still perfect record on paper with an impressive 15 wins and 15 knockouts, fans of the bright-eyed brawler are confident in his ability to win. His last fight garnered 400,000 pay per views and that was without the world title. That fight was said to have made the Olympic gold medalist a cool $6 million.

One challenge that Joshua is said to face is the fact that Martin is a southpaw. In boxing, this simply means that Martin will lead with his right hand, reserving the left for all power punches. Early in his career, Joshua has been known to struggle against  boxers of the same style. There are some who believe that he will continue to struggle “because his promoter (Eddie Hearn) has put him in with a ton of soft opponents that fight out of the unorthodox stance” (quote from boxingnewsresults.com). AJ and his team are prepared though. They have set him up to train with Otto Wallin, the unbeaten fighter from Sweden, who just so happens to be a southpaw.
