Mbuso Mandela, 24, was charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl in a Johannesburg bar. He has recently been released on bail, for R7000. Reports state that the grandson of the anti-apartheid revolutionary and former president of South Africa (1994-1999) appeared calm and collected during the court proceedings.
If you are unaware, the alleged rape happened at Mammas Shebeen restaurant & bar in Johannesburg. The victim was said to have gone to the bathroom, where she was said to have been attacked by Mbuso Mandela in one of the stalls. A week after the incident happened, Mbuso was arrested and held until his bail.
There is speculation that Winnie Mandela, Mbuso’s grandmother, sent her bodyguard to ask the victim’s family for more time so that the Mandela family could deal with the issue first. Naturally, the victim’s family is upset and is maintaining what was told to them by the young girl.
Mbuso was granted bail simply because he was not considered a flight risk with the coming birth of his third child. He was ordered to turn all travel documents and ordered to stay at the address he provided.
The Citizen reports that Mbuso admits he had sex with the young teen but his legal represenation maintains it was consensual and that the young girl is older than 15, based off her Facebook profile. On the flip side, the girl’s family admits that she doesn’t have an ID, only a birth certificate which shows she was, in fact, born in 2000, which would make her under the legal age of 16 in regards to South African law.
